Day 4- Tuesday 20th June
"In spite of ourselves we'll end up sitting on a rainbow!
Salem - Steckelsdorf 185 km. Total 704 km.
Dear me, what a shocker. The weather forecast had predicted temperatures
up to 36 degr. C, so I chose to leave at an extremely ungodly hour. As
early as 10 minutes past 4 a.m. I decided to get up. By the way, I had
fallen asleep rather late because some yokel had played loud music till
1 o'clock a.m.
On the other hand I did not pay a Pfennig to stay there.
Things were ok to start with and before 11.30 a.m. I had ridden 100 km. But then the heat started to get serious and it was as uncanny as I had expected it to be. The roads were acceptable the first part of the day, but then I ran into some of these hated "Strassenschäden". You simply don't get anywhere then.
To be honest with you, I had sold out when I reached Havelsberg at
150 km. There was a camping site, but I decided to ride to the next site
in Steckelsdorf.
I did manage, but I only made it by the skin of my teeth.
On my arrival to the site I could not find anybody, but a nice lady (again) told me where to put up the tent. Afterwards I could pay DM 6; if I did not see anybody she'd accept the money. She also gave me a key to the shower room. I had a shower, not because I really needed it, but it has become a sort of tradition that you have a shower after a long day on the roads.
I went to a kiosk, where I had something to eat.
Next to my tent there is a sunshade over some benches. My neighbour tells me, that I can sit there. I could have used a sofa , because I feel rather devalued right now. Beaming with joy my neighbour also tells me that tomorrow will be even more hot, which by the way will be the case for the following days as well.

These temperatures are going to kill
me. |
Here I may perhaps add that my German is so good that I can always make myself understandable. I am not sure if the grammar is correct, but who cares?
Right now I am studying the route for tomorrow. I think I will try to avoid "Nebenstrassen" and go for the bigger roads in an attempt to avoid "Strassenschäden".
