Day 12 - Wednesday 28th June
Vysoke Myto - Nysa
156 km. Total 1883 km.
"In spite of ourselves we'll end up sitting on a rainbow"
We set out according to our plan, and once
again the day was filled up with one hill after the other.
It was rather exhausting. At 65 km we had to go into a restaurant, where
we had chicken with fried potatoes. Then we came out on top again.
We had no rain, but it was rather chilly. We
passed the boundary about 20 km before Nysa and here I was lucky. The police
border guard was very interested in my passport. He ran off with it and
stayed away for about 5 minutes. But that was all.
Extremely disappointing.
We had a map of Nysa, so it was comparatively
easy for us to locate the Tomaszewski residence. We had to ask for the
way a couple of times and then I found out that people from Poland and
Czech Rep. are able to understand each other.
I did not know that.
Passing the River Nysa I almost felt like being "home" again
after my visit 6 years prior to this one.
I rang the bell and Wietold came rushing down
the stairs and gave us a heartly welcome. So did the entire family. They
had expected us somewhat earlier, but we had ridden as fast as we could.
The family had grown a little bigger since my last visit, because David
now had a girlfriend.
It was funny to notice how the children had changed. Justyna was no longer
a little girl. Now she was a young lady. And I was very pleased to learn
that her command of the English language was indeed very good.
David was now the happy owner of a car, so he took us to the Lake Nysa
where we stayed a while. Wietold also showed us his school. When we returned
to the flat we found out that a lot of visitors had arrived while we were
away.
Most of them were the yachtsman I had met 6 years earlier, now complemented
with their wives and children. They had prepared a small game for me. When
they visited Denmark we played a number of party games and that was exactly
what we did again.
I was suppposed to find out which husband, wife and child belonged together.
It was easy with the children, because they looked like their fathers.
Concerning the wives I got lucky by means of some wild guesses.
Now it was time to an enourmous feast. I am
not exaggerating when I claim that the big table they had placed in the
living room simply ran over with the most wonderful and delicious food.
To empty that table that evening would have been an impossible task. Everybody
were cheerful and there was a lot of talking going on, most of it in Polish.
Mateusz proved to be a very good translator. He saw to that I knew what
they were talking about. It was much easier for Jaroslav; he understood
most of it.
I had also met Mateusz 6 years earlier, and his English had approved considerably.
The party continued until 11 p.m. where the
visitors left and we all went to sleep.
Jaroslav and I slept in the childrens' room and all the Tomaszewskis slept
in the living room.
A splendid day was over

FACT BOX Some people ride 300 km every day, and others
only 85 km. " I cannot ride that much" is what you sometimes
hear almost apologetically. |
