Campings and campinggear

Campsites are abundant in Iceland with over 120 registered campsites. Camping grounds typically open from the beginning of June until the end of August or middle of September depending on location and weather conditions. Facilities normally include showers; WC and some places offer thermal pools and cooking facilities.
The price for camping varies but is usually around 8 USD for adults, half-price for pensioners and free charge for children under 16. Camping outside designated campsites is not allowed, sometimes enforced with a fine.

You'll find more luxurious sites in the tourist area's like Reykjavik, Mývatn, Ásbyrgi and along road nr 1. Only few of the campsites are comparable with sites in tourist countries (campshop, laundrette, swimming pool). If there is a town near the campsite you can take a shower in the local swimming pool. The few campsites in the interior are usually of the primitive type (only cold water), although hot showers were introduced lately at Askja and Nýidalur. But if you are lucky there is a natural warm stream nearby (Laugafell, Hveravellir and Landmannalaugar).
Prices for campsites range from ISK 300 to 800 a night (1 person, 1 tent), and sometimes a campsite is free. Showers often cost ISK 50 to 200 for 5 minutes.
Camping in the wild is common, and often necessary. But don't expect to find nice pieces of flat grassland. You'll be glad when you find a stretch of land that's flat and not too rocky.

In the interior you have mountaincabins. The ones with a warden are often nice homelike buildings. The unattended ones vary between 'good but dirty' and 'it is dry in here'.
