DAY 3
Thursday 8th June 2007

My 3rd day at school was not a typical one, because the day would start with an official arrangement. Among other things this was they day when they marked the turnover of the container with computers, tables and cabinets which arrived from Denmark earlier on.

The programme was supposed to start at 7 am and when we did start it was in the neighbourhood of 7 am.
Some elections had to be carried out and also a large number of speeches. Naturally I was unable to understand anything, because it was all in Tagalog. There was a special welcome to "yours truly" , who together with other VIPs was placed on an elevated stage.

Even if it was still early days, it was hot as in an oven, but the many student did not complaint, even if it was obvious that they had a hard time surviving.
There was also show dancing presented by 5 skilled students.
Afterwards we had a snack and a soft drink in the canteen.
I could rest for about an hour before I had the leson in 4th year.
This lesson was special because I had an assistant with me which is always a nice thing.
It was Miss Gelyn Fernando, the daughter of Jocelyn and Willy, who attended the morning arrangement and who now offered to assist me.
It was a big help to me, and I hope she had a bit of fun too.
Hmmmm.
Lets ask her.

- It was fun because it was my first time to be an assistant. But it was also strange because a few months ago, I was also a student wearing the same uniform, listening to my teacher.
Gelyn Fernando

  I am back.......
First I outlined what we had been doing the day before, and I showed them a small movie, I had also recorded the day before, when we sang "Mester Jakob". And we sang it once again, before we sang it as a round.
The topic of the day was an exercise where the students would use the letters in their first names as elements in words describing human qualities.

Friendly
thrustworthy
energetic
understanding
intersting
brave
kind
curious

I told them they should use qualities they possessed or would like to possess.
They started working, and I was quite happy with most of the things they produced.
Its my plan that these "master pieces" of art will be handed over to their potential Danish penfriends together with the letters they will write later on.
The assignment of the day was questions for me or for a fictious Danish student.

Had they done their homework?
Oh yes!!!!!!
I collected all the assignments, and they were very nice and interesting.

I went back to the canteen after the lesson to relax a little.
I witnessed that the students were busy cleaning and tidying up all over the school.
They dont have people to clean here, so they have to do it themselves.
And strangely enough they did not seem to mind doing so.

Hmmmm. I cant help imagining a working situation like that in "good old Denmark".
In my mind's eye I see angry, indignant, troubled students trying to figure out how they can escape from this injustice as quickly as possible.
This comparison does not at all turn turn out in favour of the Danish students.
Soooorry.

I have to admit I do a little reuse.
It's more or less the same things we do in the 2 groups I work with. Of course I adjust because of the difference in age, but basically it's the same.
So once again it was master pieces of art made out of their first names.

I am not totally unknown to the students anymore, so students who normally is a bit ...... "naughty", will not hide any more.
Normally boys
Because boys will be boys.
I have been in the came for a considerable number of years, and when one of the boys was too focused on what was going on around him, I asked him if he had a problem.
He denied that, and then I told him, that very soon, he would have one.
That helped, but actually the class was more noisy than the day before.
But still they worked well and produced nice things
I also found the time to reply to some of the questions.
Many questions were interesting and highly relevant.

The weather was a little bit cooler than the day before, but not much.
The rainy season is just about to start, and until that happens, the humidity of the air is around 100 %.
I would not be surprised if I spotted a small fish swimming past my head, he he.
I know quite well, that the students are used to it, but still I am impressed when I see how they cope with this challenge.
They use fans constantly and they wipe sweatfrom their faces all the time, but so far I have not witnessed any of the outbreaks of rage that we experience far too often from far too many students in Denmark, when they (once again) feel persecuted as victims of unjustice.
I would very much like to see the Danish students fight their way through a school day with 8 lessons at 60 minutes in monster temperaures like we have here.
Every day I walk from school. After work its not that important, that I am soaking wet, when I reach my final destination. And I can use the exercise.

The tricycle drivers, however, have a hard time understanding why anyone decides to walk when its not absolutely needed.
On the short walk I have to turn down at least half a dozen of tricycle driver.
I can't blame them. They need they work.

And the cant blame me. I need the exercise.
